Why I Believe So Many Nurses Get Stuck in the Planning Phase

As a nurse with over 25 years of experience, I’ve learned something that surprised me:

Nurses are some of the smartest, most capable people I know… yet so many of us stay stuck.

Not because we’re lazy. Not because we lack ambition. Not because we aren’t talented.

We get stuck because we spend so much time planning our next move that we never fully step into it.

And honestly, I’ve been there too.

There were moments in my own life where I kept telling myself:

  • “I need to learn a little more first.”

  • “I need more certifications.”

  • “I need a better plan.”

  • “Maybe next year.”

  • “What if I fail?”

  • “What if people judge me?”

Meanwhile, I watched people with less experience move forward simply because they were willing to start before they felt ready.

That realization changed me.

Nursing Trains Us to Be Careful

As nurses, we are trained to think critically and avoid mistakes at all costs.

At the bedside, that mindset protects patients.

But outside of nursing, that same mindset can quietly keep us trapped.

We overanalyze every decision:

  • Should I go back to school?

  • Should I become an NP?

  • Should I start the business?

  • Should I create content online?

  • Should I leave bedside nursing?

  • Should I apply for the leadership role?

We want certainty before we move.

But life rarely works that way.

I’ve realized that growth often requires movement before confidence arrives.

Sometimes Planning Becomes a Comfort Zone

This may be hard to hear, but I say it with love because I understand it personally.

Sometimes planning feels safer than action.

Planning lets us stay busy without risking failure.

We take another course.Watch another webinar.Rewrite the business plan.Edit the website again.Wait for the “perfect” time.

I’ve done it myself.

Planning can make us feel productive while fear quietly keeps us standing still.

Burnout Makes Everything Feel Harder

I also think many nurses underestimate how much burnout affects our ability to move forward.

When you spend years pouring into patients, families, employers, and everyone else, eventually your own dreams begin to feel exhausting too.

You start doubting yourself. You second-guess every idea. You feel mentally drained before you even begin.

I’ve spoken to so many nurses who are incredibly gifted but completely depleted.

And when you’re depleted, even small steps can feel overwhelming.

We Wait for Permission

This is one of the biggest things I’ve noticed among nurses.

We wait for permission to become who we already are capable of becoming.

We wait for:

  • validation

  • approval

  • another degree

  • another title

  • someone to tell us we’re ready

But the truth is, confidence doesn’t magically appear one morning.

Confidence is built through action.

Every major step I’ve taken in my own journey came with uncertainty.

Whether it was advancing my education, building my platform, coaching nurses, or stepping into entrepreneurship — I never felt fully ready.

I simply decided to move anyway.

What I Want Nurses to Understand

You do not need to have your entire life figured out before taking the first step.

You only need enough courage to begin.

Your first attempt does not need to be perfect.Your first video does not need to go viral.Your first business idea does not need to be flawless.Your first step just needs to happen.

I truly believe so many nurses are sitting on gifts, ideas, businesses, ministries, leadership abilities, and dreams that the world needs.

But fear keeps those gifts trapped in the planning phase.

My Advice to Nurses Who Feel Stuck

Start before you feel ready.

Take the class.Launch the page.Apply for the position.Create the business.Post the content.Speak up.Bet on yourself.

Because the longer we wait for perfection, the longer we delay the life we truly want.

And one thing nursing has taught me is this:

Time moves quickly.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a nurse reading this and feeling stuck, I want you to know something:

You are probably far more prepared than you think you are.

You don’t need permission to grow. You don’t need to have every answer. You don’t need to be fearless.

You simply need to move.

One step.One decision.One action at a time.

That is how transformation begins.
